Living with Thinning Hair: AKA "Fighting the Good Fight"

I remember the first time I felt self-conscious about the thinness of my hair. It was back in my Miss Louisiana beauty pageant competition days, when I was up against girls with naturally luscious, full locks. My mother eventually invested more than $600 in a set of Great Lengths extensions to give me more volume—but even that did not mask the thinness on my actual scalp.

Thick ponytail full of extensions— but still thin at the scalp part-line

Growing up as a young girl, it was hard not to compare that my older sister had a very large amount of hair. Her ponytail thickness was about three times the size of mine!

I was probably wondering why I was born a bald-headed baby

When I became a news anchor in my hometown NBC affiliate at KTVE, I felt even more pressure to look my best. My mother, who commiserated with me about having thin hair, would call me after I finished a morning show to say, “Your scalp is shining through on camera. Put some makeup on your head.” So I figured out that using an eyeshadow brush to apply MAC “carbon” black eyeshadow on my hair part-line was a simple, effective method to hide the thinness.

I figured highlights would make my hair look thicker, so I tried that in the anchoring days

Eventually, I became a client of a laser center in West Monroe, Louisiana, where a hugely magnifying scalp camera proved that I DID sprout baby hairs when I used men’s Rogaine foam plus sat under a special laser-for-your-scalp chair for 30 minutes three times a week. I was thrilled, especially since my mother had paid $1,000 for the therapy! My mom was the one who had urged me to go, because she was tired of seeing me struggle with washing and drying my clip-in hair extensions for when I anchored.

You can see where the hair extensions didn't blend with my natural hair on my wedding day

It was there at the laser center that I also began to use Toppik, which covers your scalp with keratin hair fibers. I still use that product to this day to mask the thin spots, and I also will use Joan Rivers’ hair makeup, as well. Toppik is quicker to apply, but more expensive. I also learned to take Biotin supplements, and I still have them as part of my daily vitamins dose. I even bought my own mini hair laser, but I have not been that great about keeping up using it regularly.

I would have kept it all up after the success of sprouting new hair at the laser center, but—I got married and moved away! With the stress of starting a new job in a new city with a new marriage, I let my hair regimen fall by the wayside. So for years now, I have been struggling with this thin hair issue—and I’m ready to tackle it, literally by the roots, as I begin a new regimen using new Women’s ROGAINE Foam with 5% minoxidl. I already love the product and have been religiously applying it to my scalp every day. :)

A typical hair day—after a thorough styling routine, including four different hair products, blow drying with four different round brushes, and finally teasing for volume

PROS of the new Women's ROGAINE FOAM with 5% minoxidl:
--Easy to use!
--Does not show up in your hair so you can literally put it on your head and walk out the door -- this is my FAVORITE THING about this product
--Does not drip, like the previous women's product did because it was so watery
--You only have to apply it once per day! With the old formula, you had to apply it twice per day

CONS:
--Takes a bit of time to work, you can't just magically sprout hair overnight -- you ain't a Chia Pet!
--A dermatologist told me that once you start using the product, if you want to maintain your results you can never stop using it... but I don't know about you, I want to have hair forever! ;)

Disclosure: I'm working with The List TV Show South Florida as they follow along with my journey using this product-- hopefully it works!

Busy week! TV appearance & weekend fun around South Florida

It's been busy ever since I last blogged... and I do intend to do a follow-up post about my husband's infamous Mardi Gras birthday party. :) Better late than never! I have all those pictures to upload!

Meantime, this is one look I felt like posting because I am a huge fan of this boyfriend blazer. You may notice me wearing it a LOT-- and it was from WALMART! I should have bought it in black, LOL, as frequently as I wear it!

I like this shirt, b/c it has a giraffe on it
Lip shade is a combination of Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge in Coquette, and Bath & Body Works C.O. Bigelow Mint Mentha lip gloss

This is what I wore when I was on The List TV Show on Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday, making this king cake.

You can watch the segment The List TV Show segment HERE!

Now on to another topic... weekend fun around South Florida! My husband and I love to be tourists around where we live in Palm Beach County. This past weekend, we did the Diva Duck tour that is on land and water, based out of City Place. It was $54 total, and SO worth it. I described it on my Facebook page as "cheesy, but fun," and that's exactly what it was-- complete with interesting history, looks at mansions belonging to the likes of Celine Dion and Elizabeth Post's granddaughter, and chock full of "ducky" jokes that had me "quacking" up. ;) I couldn't resist.

Two weekends ago (yes, I'm playing catch-up) we went to our favorite beach spot-- Riviera Beach's Singer Island. That's where we snorkel. But the reason I love the beach spot there is because parking is free, and especially because there is that little strip-mall type place that has several restaurants like Two Drunken Goats and Johnny Longboat's, and even a 7-11 and a beach-stuff store.

We beach it up every weekend! This is Riviera Beach's Singer Island

It is also just down the road from our favorite snorkel spot, Phil Foster Park at the Blue Heron Bridge that has the awesome snorkel trail. I just love love love going there-- but I am going to hold off a few more weeks because the water has been cold lately. I'm so over it right now! Bring on the warmer water!

I met "Jungle Jack" Hanna at work! MAC lipstick and lip gloss/lip glass

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting and listening to "Jungle Jack" Hanna, TV host and author, zookeeper, animal advocate, conservationist, etc.

With "Jungle Jack" and Callie and Maura, two zookeepers I work with

He spoke eloquently about zoo life today, and how zoos are meant to be "for the people." Well, obviously for the animals, too, but I knew what he meant-- we really have to reach people to make an impact on them.

In other fun career news, I finally have been adding text to photos lately to post on the social media of the zoo I work for. I came up with the below gem that I'm particularly loving... it shows off our adorable baby tapir calf, who looks crazy-cute in almost every single photo I take of her!

Beauty stuff: I am full-on obsessed with a gift sent to me by my mentor and friend, Farrah.

I stole your Facebook profile pic, Farrah! 'Cuz it's so pretty :)

She sent me a baggie full of MAC empty compacts, and said that if you turn them in to be recycled at a local MAC beauty counter, they will give you a free lipstick of your choice for every six empty primary packaging containers! It's part of their Back to M.A.C. program. I love how they are thanking customers for going green.

Green is beautiful!! So is my new favorite "nude lip" combo of MAC Faux satin lipstick topped with Viva Glam Lipglass. I texted Farrah that I was totally using the two products she sent to be recycled as newbies to me, LOL! I know, kinda gross to be using my friend's lipsticks, but I wiped 'em off first. Does that count as cleaner? It doesn't? Oh well, just call me a beauty recycler. ;)

Wearing my new "nude lip" faves... thanks, Farrah!
MAC satin lipstick in "Faux" -- almost all gone! I will dig it out to make the most of it!
